| From the president of the DLSS |
Welcome to the Deakin GEELONG and WARNAMBOOL Law Students Society (DLSS) website. The DLSS is a student-run organization dedicated to furthering law student interests. The DLSS is a voluntary student service, a service to make the study of law more than just endless reading and Exams but a holistic experience designed to provide a range of services that can meet each individual law students needs.
It is the role of the DLSS to ensure that each law student gains as much as possible from their time spent on campus in GEELONG and WARNAMBOOL and to provide a reliable support network for Deakins OFF-CAMPUS Law students, so that Deakin Law students are able to develop academically, professionally and personally.
“The GEELONG DLSS in 2009 aims to be a professional and accountable body which provides strong ACADEMIC support, develops and promotes a variety of CAREER DEVELOPMENT opportunities and which continues to offer a range of SOCIAL FUNCTIONS for ALL law students”
The 2009 DLSS Functions will include the Clayton Utz ‘Wearable Art’ Law Camp for ALL Law students, Whyte, Just and Moore Trivia Night, Harwood Andrews Annual Law Ball, BBQ’s and Pub Crawls. These social functions aim to provide a release for students from the grind of study and facilitate and strengthen the bonds that exist between students in a social setting, creating fond, everlasting memories of University life.
The 2009 Competitions run through the DLSS aim to provide students with the opportunity to further their educational experience through the practical application of the law. The art of advocacy is an important skill in law and is developed and refined through the Mooting, Witness Examination, Negotiation and Mediation competitions. The essay and letter writing also allow students to further their research and communication skills.
In 2009 the DLSS is committed to expanding the breadth of employment prospects of all Deakin law students through the publication of the Seasonals Guide, Seminars, Careers Fair/Dinner, Careers Guide and the monthly Web release of ‘The Brief’ a newsletter sponsored by Clayton Utz informing students of various current Career development opportunities. Through these services, we augment the law faculties dedication to education and professional excellence, ensuring that Deakin students continue to remain amongst the most sought after law graduate Nationwide.
Through the DLSS, Deakin law students have access to competitions at both a state and national level via the Victorian Council of Law Students Societies and the Australian Law Students Association respectively. The DLSS also actively support the University international mooting teams, study abroad programs and other academic pursuits.
“The 2009 GEELONG DLSS Committee is a collection of vibrant, astute, friendly and enthusiastic individuals committed to maintaining a professional standard and consolidating the GEELONG DLSS role at Deakin University.”
Please take time to interact with our website and if you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the relevant committee member or myself personally. On behalf of the GEELONG DLSS, I would like to encourage all Deakin law students to embrace the range of services provided and I wish you every success in your study of the Law and wherever it leads you.
